Forbes Farm

LOCATION: Monzi, South Africa

SIZE: 8 hectares 

SCOPE: Farm conversion, masterplanning, water retention features, food forest and various growing areas.

The main goal of this project is to reconvert a banana farm into a financially viable enterprise and family homestead. The banana production had been negatively affected by the proximity of the wetland and the increase of the magnitude and frequency of heavy rain events. This has resulted in the loss of a large productive area. The proposed masterplan design intends to utilise the abundant water running through the property to restore the wetland ecosystem and provide value to the entire farm. The value is provided as increased wetland biodiversity, erosion and flooding mitigation, hydration of drier parts of the property for food production, opportunities for aquatic and semi-aquatic crops as well as aquatic ornamental and medicinal plant production.
