Lewis Farm

LOCATION: Ballito, South Africa

SIZE: 6,5 hectares 

SCOPE: Ecological buildings, masterplanning, water retention features, water harvesting and storage, waste water, food forest, various growing areas.

The project comprises the design and construction of two homesteads within a 2,5 hectare precinct surrounded by 4 hectares of recently planted macadamia trees. The site was part of a sugar cane farm previously resulting in compacted soils and depleted of nutrients. One of the main goals of the project is to boost the biodiversity in order to support the homesteads and the macadamia trees. A series of water retention features, including ponds and terraces, reduces water runoff and improves water infiltration. Ponds provide recreational spaces as well as added biodiversity and water security.
